Gallery of celebrations and events through the years
In 2021, Learners bravely came to two classes a week in Nanaimo, BC. Pictured left is Learner Yvonne, with Teacher Maureen. Middle photo are learners Louisa and Florence. Pictured Right was the Christmas Party. Learners who came to classes that year, their family, and the volunteer teachers and Board of TLC.
In 2022, we took the Nanaimo Learners to see The Snotty Nose Rez Kids at the Malasapina Theatre. Then in the summer we all went to Butchart Gardens. A bucket list item for many!
2022 Christmas Party came with families of Learners, gifts, games and bannock tacos! Yum!
End of the Spring session, we had a celebration of all the Learners who stuck with the program and as always, they love to laugh it up! On the right, Learner Louisa is showing off her cedar work talents with visiting guest singer, Joelle Rabu.
One of the Learners who inspired us and many others was Cathy Jim. She came to classes for 2 years and learned to tell her family stories through the written word. In 2023, Cathy was invited to St. Michaels University School (SMUS) to read her stories and share her knowledge with the SMUS teachers and students. Cathy inspired other Learners to want to write their stories too and story writing has become an important part of TLC offerings. In
We were allowed to set up a TLC table at the South Island Powwow and the Nanaimo Learners took a road trip down to Victoria to visit!
We were very pleased to meet the good folks from Fu Hui Education Foundation who came to Nanaimo to meet us. What a lovely day!
Another fun field trip was taking the Learners to The Raptors outdoor exhibit and hawk walk.
Another graduation celebration at the end of Spring term 2023. Have a wonderful summer break and see you in September!
2024 – A celebration of new beginnings with the Victoria Chapter of TLC. Thank you to the good folks at the Saanich Centennial Branch of Greater Victoria Public Library for hosting us and sharing your love of learning and reading with us. Left photo is some of the Victoria Learners and teachers and on the right is Learner Heather, who read to us one of her funny and touching stories. We celebrated with food and cake and gifts!
More celebrations and fun with both Nanaimo and Victoria Learners. We played Winter Bingo created with clues by our amazing teacher Linda. We also had the wonderful author Monique Gray Smith come to Victoria Class (pictured here in the middle photo with Learner Rose) to read some of her work and she gifted the Learners lots of books! Thank you Monique.
We are looking forward to more Indigenous authors come to visit us at TLC Victoria and Nanaimo!
